France FinTech, the professional association of French fintech, insurance and regtech, publishes its annual barometer of fundraising, in partnership with Bpifrance.
2021 will have seen once again a strong acceleration of French fintech. This trend concerns each component of the sector.

Turnover has experienced very sustained growth with particularly cutting-edge sectors: payments, insurance, crypto, financing, services for very small businesses / SMEs.
Recruitments were numerous with a sector now employing around 30 jobs.
The creation of fintech itself continued with more than 150 new start-ups, particularly in the sectors of insurance, financing, micro-savings and impact finance.

This development, as well as the investment projects of our companies, have led to a strong increase in fundraising.
These have in fact reached € 2,3 billion (i.e. + 174% compared to 2020) in 93 operations.

The transaction analysis shows some interesting trends :

  • a sharp increase in average ticket which stands at € 24,4 million (+ 86%).
  • the presence of significant amount transactions : 7 fundraising over € 100 million, including four over € 4 million and one over € 150 million (Ledger, 300).
  • three quarters of transactions (in value and number) concerned Series B, C and D, confirming that many of our players have reached critical mass.
  • a consistently high level of seed operations (7% of the total, average ticket € 3,7 million).

Private (29% in value) and operational services (27%) register 3 at the top of the tricks.

Also note, the rise of foreign investors and in particular from outside Europe, the majority in large transactions. In this context, American and, to a lesser extent, British funds were particularly active.

The purpose of these surveys is mainly:

  • the internationalization of models,
  • technology (IA, Blockchain),
  • and especially recruitments. Our recent study reveals hiring intentions of 10 employees (excluding foreigners), ie a workforce expected at the end of 000 of nearly 2022 jobs.

The lifting of the exercise revealed 5 new unicorns, which are added to the 3 previous ones.

More generally, France is consolidating its place in the top trio of European levees.

  • United Kingdom: € 8,3 billion (including Revolut for € 679 million and Checkout for € 450 million)
  • Germany: 3,6 billion € (including N26 for 786 M €, and Trade Republic for 740 M €)
  • France: € 2,3 billion
  • Sweden: 1,7 billion € (including Klarna for 524M €)

FinTech is one of the most dynamic sectors of French tech:

  • first sector of the Next40 index (22,5% of the total)
  • second in the FrenchTech 120 ranking (16%)
  • 5 of the 13 unicorns that appeared in France in 2021 are fintech
  • first sector of unicorns in France (8/24)

The year 2021 will have seen the French fintech ecosystem experience a strong acceleration, very promising for the future of the sector. Our companies are developing, making themselves viable and internationalizing.

France has a real sector of excellence here, capable of bringing out several international champions and other “super apps”. Our ecosystem contributes significantly to skilled employment, growth (and recovery), financing of the real economy, short circuits, sovereignty, and the digitization of the economy.
He is resolutely committed to sustainable development and green finance, inclusion and financial education. Its innovations are at the service of individuals, businesses and public authorities.

However, this sector must be supported and consolidated:

  • Even if the size of our companies is growing very rapidly, we do not yet own any giants (“décacornes” and beyond) unlike our American and Chinese counterparts of course, but also English, German and Swedish.
  • France's high-quality pool of talent (especially in technology) will probably not be enough to meet demand, all other things being equal.
  • Local funding has improved a lot but is still insufficient in some pockets.

The continued mobilization of the entire ecosystem, entrepreneurs, public authorities, academia, regulators, funding, is therefore essential.
All of these subjects will be dealt with throughout the year and also during the next edition of Fintech R: Evolution on Thursday, October 20, 2022.
