Consultation European Commission - Digital services
As part of the second priority of its work program "A Europe ready for the digital age", the European Commission has announced its intention to propose a new law on digital services in the fourth quarter of 2020. In this context, it has launched a consultation on digital services.
This consultation, open until September 8, covers topics such as online security, freedom of expression, and fair and just conditions in the digital economy. It covers the two aspects announced by the Commission as part of the digital services package:
- the first set of rules would concern the main principles laid down by the Directive on electronic commerce, in particular the freedom to provide digital services throughout the EU single market;
- the second measure would address the issue of a level playing field in European digital markets where, at present, a few large online platforms act as “gatekeepers”.
