Fintechs: a sector in the process of feminization
Around a third of fintech employees are now female collaborators. If this proportion tends to increase steadily over the years, the prospect of seeing it jump in the short term seems limited, however, due in particular to the reduced number of women in engineering and computer schools. But initiatives are multiplying to break this "glass ceiling".
What place for women in tech? At the beginning of November, in Lisbon, this subject did not fail to be discussed during the Web Summit 2018, the largest exhibition dedicated to the sector in Europe. While the speakers have not succeeded in providing precise answers to this thorny question, other actors have succeeded in the sole segment of finance start-ups in France. In mid-October, the strategy and management consulting firm specializing in financial services Exton Consulting published, in partnership with Finance Innovation, a study on the hexagonal ecosystem of fintechs. "On the basis of interviews with a representative number of companies belonging to this category, we found that they employed 26% of women", points out Sophie Zellneyer, fintech and innovation director at Exton Consulting. For its part, France FinTech, which defends the interests of the profession, suggests a rate of 33%.
